Lesson Outline:
Ice breaking 15 min
Part 1 - Exploration 20 min
Part 2 - Learning through discovery 25 min
Part 3 - Practical applications 30 min
Part 4 - Presentation of new information 15 min
Fixing knowledge 5 min
Part 5 - Investigation 15 min
Activities:
Ice breaking 15 min
To begin, we will start from previous knowledge and observations on plant and animal species that exist in some areas of the African continent (example: trees, shrubs and animal species that live in the forests of the African continent).
The teacher asks the following question: Do you think Augmented Reality can help learning? Have you tested any application in this regard?
The students answer the questions and present information about augmented reality-based applications from the information they found on the Internet, justifying their usefulness.
For the second part of the activity, the students will work in groups of 4.
Group 1 - plants;
Group 2 - animals;
Group 3 - mammals;
Group 4 - journal creation - In the StoyJumper application (plants, animals, mammals).
Part 1 - Exploration 20 min
The teams' activities will focus on identifying key information, which will lead to the development of communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills.
During this phase, the students will search for information about species of plants and animals and terrestrial and aquatic mammals on the Internet on the continent of Africa.
Students in group 4 will write in the journal the information received from the other groups.
Part 2: Learning through discovery - 25 min
For the next step of the activity, the students were introduced to the use of the ARC Geography App.
The teacher creates a class in the app and invites the students with the join code (if they are on mobile devices) or the join link (if they are on stationary devices). The teacher selects "Continents" in the app and the students will automatically follow. If the students are on mobile devices, they have to point their cameras to the African continent on the Geography World Map/the Africa Marker (make sure you have it printed out before you start this activity).
The students will use the app to explore different areas of the African continent.
They will look for information about land, vegetation, animals and terrestrial and aquatic mammals.
Each team will have a CleverBooks map, a phone or a tablet.
Throughout this stage students will focus on answering the following questions:
What plants (group 1), animals (group 2) and mammals (group 3) can you identify from the images you see?
What geographical areas have you identified on the African continent?
What species of plants and animals on land and in water are protected by law?
How are they geographically distributed?
The students will be encouraged to identify as many species of plants, animals, or mammals that live in the water and on land in that geographical region. They will then compare images found on the Internet with those in the ARC Geography App, and the names of the species identified.
Each student will have a phone, iPad or tablet and an Africa marker.
Part 3: Practical applications - 30 minutes
Group 1- plants
access the ARC Geography App and do the following:
click on several types of plants,
associate the image in the application with the ones on the Internet and identify the names of the plants that live in that geographical region
take screenshots from the application with the identified plants
Group 2 animals
click on as many animals as possible
associate the image in the application with the ones on the Internet and identify the names of the animals that live in that geographical region
take screenshots from the application with the identified animals
Group 3 mammals
click on as many mammals as possible
associate the image in the application with the one on the Internet and identify the names of the mammals that live in that geographical region
take screenshots from the application with the identified animals
All groups
Have a look at different weather conditions and the impact of weather conditions on the growth and development of plants, animals and mammals and specify the species that do not withstand adverse weather conditions.
Group 4
Make puzzles/quizzes on educaplay.com/resource-editor (two members for each puzzle) with the information received from the three groups.
Send the address of the puzzles/quizzes to the other groups to solve
After 30 minutes, students will group to share and discuss their results and make the necessary observations.
Part 4 - presentation of new information 15 min
At this point, the teacher will introduce to the students the new notions about climatic and hydrological hazards and how they can affect species of plants, animals and land and water mammals.
The teacher presents theoretical information, Climatic hazards, and climate hazards in Africa
Fixing knowledge: 5 min
What negative effects can occur for all species due to climatic hazards?
Refer to only one type of hazard and specify the effects.
Part 5: Investigation
After what is presented by the teacher, the students will then return to their groups and select a type of hazard where they will describe their causes and effects on plant, animal and mammal species.
They will identify the species of plants, animals and mammals, in the ARC application for geography.
They will create a list of species identified and affected by change.
During this investigation, students will focus on the following questions:
What do you think is the impact of hazards on the terrestrial and aquatic environment?
Do you think that human actions have any influence on the occurrence of some of these hazards?
Suggested questions:
Can you name examples of interdependent relationships between plants and animals?
How do these relationships affect the functioning ability of the greater environment?
How do climate hazards affect the plants, animals, and mammals, as well as their habitats and their interdependent relationships?
What species of plants, animals and mammals affected by climatic and hydrological hazards can you identify?
What are the most dangerous hazards? Give examples and justify how these hazards affect certain species in Africa.
You can find the answers to the above questions, in the Quiz created in the Educaplay online application to which you are invited.
Additional ideas: debate
Students will be able to demonstrate that they have understood the new vocabulary about change by identifying at the same time the favorable elements regarding their triggering and the effects produced on all species.
After completing, the students will answer a few questions through a test created on Google forms.

Instructions for teachers
The mobile application is used to experience Augmented Reality. Students who are unfamiliar with the term "Augmented Reality" must be explained before the activities begin.
Augmented Reality (AR) is like Virtual Reality (VR) that you can see through the screen of your mobile device. In our case the “magic” map is powered by a special pixel combination and this helps our mobile application “ARC Geography” to recognize the pixel set and map virtual objects on top of it right through your smartphone screen. The magic happens when you point with the camera of your mobile device at the map in front of you. (CleverBooks, 2019)
Adaptation for students with special educational needs
Have each group choose a habitat and draw pictures of plants and animals that would be found there.
